Business Botswana and BURS Strengthen Private Sector Readiness on New Tax Laws

Business Botswana, in partnership with Botswana Unified Revenue Services, has successfully concluded a two-day stakeholder engagement workshop held at GICC from 13–14 July 2026. The workshop equipped the private sector with practical insights into the new Income Tax Act, Tax Administration Act and Value Added Tax Act, which came into effect on 1 July 2026.
The engagement provided businesses with a platform to better understand the new tax framework, compliance requirements, implementation timelines and to engage directly with BURS officials.
Business Botswana CEO, Ms Tumi Mbaakanyi, reaffirmed Business Botswana’s shared commitment to simplifying compliance and supporting businesses as they adapt to the new tax environment. She cautioned that during this economic hardships newly introduced regulatory instruments must be balanced to ensure that their fiscal benefits do not work against the goal of having a thriving private sector that does not only create jobs but enhances investor confidence.
The Acting Commissioner General of BURS, Mr Podiso Valashia, also reaffirmed BURS' commitment to working closely with the private sector to ensure a smooth transition, deepen understanding of the new tax laws, and foster a culture of voluntary compliance.
The engagement continues with workshops scheduled for Francistown on 27–28 July 2026, followed by Maun, as Business Botswana and BURS extend these important conversations across the country.
